One of the best ways to enjoy your outdoor space is to attract nature to it. We have a small balcony and even though we have a few plants, I felt I needed to bring more nature into our space in order to fully enjoy it. In the past, I noticed a few hummingbird buzzing around our complex and I decided to add a hummingbird feeder to our balcony in hopes of attracting hummingbirds. Initially, I used the formula provided when I purchased my hummingbird feeder, but I wasn’t attracting hummingbirds. At first, I thought they didn’t like the food, but as I did a more research I discovered that I wasn’t seeing hummingbirds because I set up my hummingbird feeder in the middle of their migration period.

Hummingbirds spend their winters in Mexico and Central America and migrate north to the US as early as February. I recall buying my feeder when it was a cold and perhaps it was even earlier then February. Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking.

When spring began, I knew I needed to make changes if I was going to see any visitors to our balcony.  I wasn’t confident that the food I was given with my feeder was the best option for my soon to be friends, so I set out to find a recipe that would make my balcony the best place for hummingbirds to plump up or a make a stop during the hummingbird migration.

Fun Fact: During their migration, a hummingbird’s heart can beat 1,260 times a minute, and they flap their wings up to 80 times a second.  A hummingbird’s energy level is so high, they’ll need to gain 25-40% of their weight to complete their journey.

As it turns out the best recipe for hummingbirds is quite simple. 1 part sugar to 4 parts water.

Follow these four steps to make your own hummingbird nectar.

  • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil
  • Add 1 cup of white sugar and stir in
  • Boil for a couple of minutes to kill any bacteria
  • Remove from heat and allow to chill

I tried this recipe about a week ago, and I’m down to 1/3 of my feeder! My hummingbird nectar and feeder are attracting hummingbirds regularly, and I can sit on my balcony at any time of day and spot a hummingbird. I recognize three hummingbirds that have returned over the 7-day period of time. 2 males and 1 female.

Adding a hummingbird feeder and making your own hummingbird nectar is the best way to attract hummingbirds to your outdoor space.
